Gold was discovered here in 1895. Malcolm Fleming purchased the land and prospect in 1896. He sold the property to George Muir in 1909. In 1898, the Te Puke Gold Reefs Ltd was formed with Auckland solicitors and businessmen as directors, with mainly Auckland and local shareholders, as well as London capital. A total of 20 000 pounds was raised.
